Program Overview
Earn a B.S. and an M.S. with one additional year of study.
The College of Natural and Agricultural Sciences offers a combined B.S. + M.S. program in Mathematics (Applied), enabling eligible graduates from the B.S. programs in Applied Mathematics or Computational Mathematics to complete an M.S. in Mathematics (Applied) with just one additional year of study.
Students should begin planning early. The approved proposal expects students to be on track for a four-year undergraduate degree, complete an internal Mathematics Department review before the senior year, and then apply to Graduate Division for the M.S. portion.
Eligibility
Am I Eligible?
- Be in the Applied Mathematics or Computational Mathematics B.S. program.
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.4 across all courses.
- Have a GPA of at least 3.2 in mathematics, science, and engineering courses.
- Be on track to complete the undergraduate degree within four years.
Meeting these minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

The approved proposal identifies the following courses as especially useful preparation for success in the combined-degree program.

MATH 297 is recommended for research experience, but it is not required for matriculation into the graduate portion.
How To Get Started
Application Procedure

Plan early
Submit an interest form as early as possible so the department can identify any eligibility or preparation gaps.

Apply internally
Apply through the Mathematics Department before the start of the senior year. The approved proposal lists July 15 as the internal deadline.

Submit materials
The internal application requires an online form, a transcript, and at least two letters of recommendation.

Apply to Graduate Division
After internal admission, apply for the M.S. portion through Graduate Division by June 1 of the fifth year.
Graduate Matriculation
Requirements Before The M.S. Year
Matriculation into the graduate portion in the fall following the senior year requires students to:
- Have the M.S. application accepted.
- Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the final undergraduate year.
- Complete all B.S. degree requirements by the end of the senior year.
Students with strong academic records may be admitted with limited coursework deficiencies.
Unit Policy
No Double Counting
Double counting is not allowed. Units applied to an undergraduate degree cannot also be counted toward a graduate degree.
A UC campus can allow a portion, no more than half, of the required graduate degree credits to be taken by the student while an undergraduate at that campus.
